About Eyam
The Plague Village!

While you’re visiting, we highly recommend exploring our lovely village (and working up an appetite as you do).

Take in our beautiful landscape by following a lovely circular walk.

Eyam's history is a story of sacrifice. Our community  voluntarily quarantined itself from neighbouring communities when the bubonic plague arrived in 1665, via a bale of flea-infested cloth, entered into folklore.

Many villagers died and each family would bury its own dead to minimise the plague’s contagion. but their bravery stopped the spread of bubonic plague across the Peak District to the cities of Sheffield and Manchester beyond. Read more from British Heritage Travel.

Check out our village website for all the latest information and events.
